Land and Groundwater Assessment and Remediation

Geosyntec provides specialised site assessment and remediation services to public and private sector clients in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. We employ technology-based strategies to meet our clients' stewardship, financial, and compliance goals to remediate and/or manage sites with soil and groundwater contamination issues.

Our site assessment and remediation specialists form one of the preeminent practices in North America and the U.K., and include individuals whose applied research continues to redefine the state-of-the-practice internationally.

Our European groundwater assessment and remediation practice focuses on developing solutions for our clients' most challenging site liability issues, involving contaminants such as trace metals and metalloids (e.g., chromium, nickel, arsenic, lead), petroleum hydrocarbons (such as diesel, petrol and jet fuel), and volatile organic compounds (including chlorinated solvents). We are among the international leaders in the application of in situ technologies such as bioremediation, bioaugmentation, permeable reactive barriers, and chemical oxidation for remediating a wide variety of contaminants. We are also developing other innovative technologies such in situ thermal treatment via smoldering combustion (STAR™) and electrokinetically enhanced in situ bioremediation (EK-Bio™).

We specialize in the remediation of not only "traditional" recalcitrant compounds such as chlorinated solvents but also emerging contaminants such as 1,4-dioxane (a chemical that prevents the breakdown of chlorinated solvents), perchlorate (an oxidizer in pyrotechnics and propellants), NDMA (N-nitrosodymethylamine - primarily associated with the development and production of liquid rocket fuels), MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether)and TBA (tert-butyl alcohol) – both gasoline oxygenates, and a range of biopharmaceutical constituents.

Geosyntec practitioners are adept at efficiently characterizing sites, even those with complex groundwater flow regimes, and developing remediation programmes that take advantage of the latest proven technologies. For example, a number of our hydrogeologists specialize in modeling the fate and transport of contaminants through fractured bedrock and highly anisotropic media. In the US our engineers, earth scientists, and microbiologists recently applied their expertise in fate and transport modeling, zero-valent iron (ZVI) treatment technology, and geotechnical engineering to design and construct one of the first ZVI permeable reactive barriers (PRBs). It was the first to be included in a U.S. EPA CERCLA Record of Decision and the largest ZVI PRB application at the time in North America. Our innovative applications of proven technology saved the site owners millions of dollars compared to the prescriptive remedies available at the time.

In Europe, the leading edge contaminated land and groundwater expertise that Geosyntec has in-house, combined with the greater risk-based and sometimes more pragmatic regulatory approached to dealing with contaminated land and groundwater issues, has meant that the company has been involved in a significant number of projects across Europe in the past few years.

Geosyntec is often the first-to-field with groundwater and soil treatment technologies because we have been working with them in the developmental stages through our applied research programmes. We work with U.S. and European government agencies including the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Energy, NASA, USGS, U.S. EPA, Danish EPA (Miljøstyrelsen), Capital Region of Denmark, Swedish EPA (Naturvårdsverket), and Swedish Geological Union to field test emerging technologies that offer advantages in efficiency and efficacy. Geosyntec continues to partner with USGS to commercialize a naturally-occurring microbial consortium that can treat 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TeCA) - a first-to-field bioremediation strategy for TeCA. We also worked with USGS to develop a delivery system to address high velocity groundwater seeps into tidally-influences water bodies (a first-to-field bio-mat delivery system). Much of Geosyntec's in situ bioremediation and bioaugmentation treatment expertise began as collaboration with researchers at the University of Toronto and Stanford University. Today, Geosyntec continues to partner with leading academic institutions (Georgia Tech, Cornell, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Illinois, UC Berkeley, Tufts, Central Florida, Toronto, Waterloo, Queens, and the Technical University of Denmark) on developing the next set of characterization and treatment technologies that will further enhance remediation efficiency and effectiveness.
